Kata in the Classroom
FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO LEARN OR TEACH SCIENTIFIC THINKING
The Improvement Kata is a four-step scientific working pattern practiced in many business organizations. Kata in the Classroom(KiC) brings the Improvement Kata alive through a 50-minute hands-on activity that involves teams working on a number of self-generated iterations to complete a small puzzle. Students follow the steps of the Improvement Kata to (1) face a challenge, (2) see where they are now, (3) establish their next interim goal, and (4) experiment toward that goal in three-minute rounds.
KiC helps teach universal skills for achieving challenging goals along uncharted paths:
Scientific & Creative Thinking. Generate & refine solutions to obstacles through experimentation.
Collaboration. Work in a team to accomplish a next goal on the way to a larger challenge.
Communication. Organize thoughts, data and findings, and share them effectively.

Manufacturers create tangible products, send them throughout the world and bring the money back to our community. Manufacturers provide meaningful careers and above average wages to their employees. Manufacturers are the wealth creators of any economy. As such they deserve our appreciation and acknowledgement. SAMA encourages you to Take a manufacturer to dinner this month. In fact, we’ll make it easy for you. If you bring a manufacturer to the SAMA Dinner Meeting Aug. 21, we’ll pick up the tab. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BRINGING A NON-SAMA MEMBER, MANUFACTURING COMPANY GUEST AT NO CHARGE, PLEASE CONTACT PETER STRAW.
