County Commissions Officially Declare Oct. 3, 2014 Manufacturing Day

Contrary to popular misconception, American manufacturing still holds first place in the world. According to the National Association of Manufacturers the United States accounts for 21% of the world's production; China is second with 14%, Japan 3rd with 9%. And we are seeing more "re-shoring" - bringing production back to the US - everyday.

It is important to realize that every manufacturing job supports 2.5 other jobs in the local community. Every dollar spent on R&D inside a manufacturing facility generates $1.65 in the economy at large.

Here in Florida, we manufacture everything from microchips to potato chips. Manufacturing accounts for approximately 7% of our state GDP. The majority of our manufacturing operations, roughly 80%, employ less than 50 people. Locally, that's approximately 10,000 careers in industry. Careers that may not require a four year degree yet pay at the top of the wage pyramid. Careers that do not necessitate leaving Florida. Today's manufacturing employees are technically skilled and highly productive and they are compensated accordingly.

In recognition of the value that manufacturing brings to a healthy diversified economy, the County Commissioners in both Manatee and Sarasota have proclaimed Oct.3, 2104 Manufacturing Day.
